Guest Posting Part 1 – Misconceptions & Experimentation

At the start of my blogging journey back in 2017, I foolishly neglected to explore the possibility of submitting guest posts. Many bloggers decide to do this as a way of increasing their website’s popularity.

Prioritizing my own content

I was naive to think that this wouldn’t make a difference in favor of instead choosing to focus my time on other areas of my own website. I can definitely see why bloggers would initially want to concentrate on creating content for themselves rather than others.

However, over the last few months I have been making great efforts to get in contact with other bloggers in my niche. I have done this in order to arrange guest posts so that I can get my name out there more effectively.

As a matter of fact, I’ve also been on the receiving end of this concept. I have had several bloggers try to get in touch with me offering guest posts so I thought why not try this for myself?

After review, some of these people have even gone on to be successful in contributing articles to this site. You can find an example of one just here.

I understand the skepticism in this process as you want the writing to be up to a good standard even if you are getting it for free. Furthermore, I am incredibly grateful for these contributions. This has certainly taken some of the pressure off me in terms of content output allowing me to work on other things.

Unrealistic expectations

Unfortunately, the results of my own guest blogging enquiries have mostly been negative so far. The majority of the messages and emails I have fired off have fallen on deaf ears without any response.

Although, I believe I now know why this was the case and where I have been going wrong. Looking back, my expectations may have been a bit too high as most of the websites and blogs I have targeted have been very well known. This can result in obvious failure for a few different reasons.

I can easily imagine that a lot of these popular and successful sites likely get a lot of requests of this nature. They may not have the time to reply to everyone. Even the business enquiries that do get through likely have to go through a strict vetting process with solid guidelines to follow.

Can you think of any personal finance blogs that accept guest posts? Do you think it’s best to write content for yourself or instead write content for others in order to promote?
