Baking Apple Pie Part 1: Choosing A Variety Of Apples

If you have easy access to fruit at a low price (in particular apples) then one of the best dishes you can make is the classic but humble apple pie.

This inexpensive dessert is a great treat for yourself and your household all year round. A large batch of it can also be stored for a long time. This way you can then spread it all out across the week or month.

Free Apples

I’ve made plenty of apple crumbles in my time. Although, for some reason, the idea of baking an apple pie from scratch has been sidelined until now.

I was recently gifted a couple of bags of apples from a family friend. They were fortunate enough to have an apple tree in the back yard of their new home that they had recently moved in to.

These apples were given free of charge. I’ve also been told that I can have another bag as soon as more apples are ready and ripe enough to be harvested.

Golden Delicious

Specifically, these are golden delicious apples. This means that they are sweet with a crisp texture to them. These are also great for eating as is on their own. I don’t even have to take time out and go through the rigmarole of baking anything.

Apple Texture

After I have finished baking this, I expect the filling to be quite hard . This is mainly due to the type of apple I’m using. It will be different compared to the soft and mushy filling you typically come to know from most store bought apple pies. Although, I don’t mind this so much as a change of pace.

Conventionally, I believe you are supposed to use bramley cooking apples. However, this isn’t an absolute requirement by any means.

Weighing up the right amount of ingredients

One is meant to use a kilogram of apples in this recipe. However, an individual might want to deviate from this (give or take). This will depend on how much filling you personally prefer. There are certain people who think 1kg is far too much based on the ratio of pastry and other ingredients.

Admittedly, I’m very lucky to be in a situation where I can get numerous free apples because of the company I keep. However, you have to take advantage where you can. You could even try wild apple picking out in public as long as you have permission.

Maybe you have access to another food item to you could use in a delicious recipe? Have you ever thought about making an attempt at baking an apple pie? What’s your favorite variety of apple?
