Whether you are a fan of this franchise or not, there is a fair chance that you may have heard a lot of hype surrounding The Last Of Us as of recently. All of this positive talk is well deserved.
The first few episodes of this show have been widely praised by both critics and audiences. Gamers and TV lovers can now unite. With this deal, both groups can watch perhaps the hottest TV series on our screens right now for free.
What exactly does this promotion mean?
You can now watch all of the very first episode of the hit HBO show The Last Of Us for absolutely free. Anyone who’s interested can find the full episode on the Sky TV YouTube channel.
I’m not sure if this offer will actually work for non-UK users. Although, you could try using a VPN (virtual private network) to get around the problem if not.
What is The Last Of Us about?
The story follows two survivors by the name of Joel and Ellie. Together they must both try to stay alive in a world ravaged by a global pandemic (sound familiar?).
Fans of the video games have noted how faithful the adaptation has been. On top of this, the minor changes and new additions sprinkled in have mostly been welcomed as well.
Quality & Other Features
You can watch the whole thing in up to 1080p quality. This isn’t bad considering you’re not being asked to pay anything. One can also watch with the aid of subtitles and closed captions for those who want or need it.
How long is the episode?
The runtime of the pilot episode comes in at just under an hour and 20 minutes. It almost feels like you are sitting down to watch a movie (which is great in terms of value).
I say this not just because of the length, but also due to how the episode is structured. There are a rollercoaster of story beats that we experience throughout in this fairy dense first chapter.
When did The Last Of Us offer start?
The video was initially uploaded on the 27th of January. I’m not sure how long this video will stay online. For this reason, I recommend that you should probably watch it as soon as possible.
Eligibility
You will need to sign in to your YouTube account. Viewers will need to verify their date of birth before they can proceed. This is mainly due to the extreme content of the show.
Obviously, you will need internet access. One will also require a TV set or other electronic device (perhaps a Roku streaming stick) to stream the episode seeing as it is available on YouTube.
Isn’t this illegal?
Understandably, this may seem too good to be true. Although, there is no need to worry. In terms of copyright, this is perfectly legal and above board. There is no piracy involved if that’s what concerns you.
Promotional Strategy
I have to admit, this is quite a cunning marketing decision from Sky and NOW TV. Many will likely be enticed to purchase a subscription afterwards. Doing this will mean that they can continue watching the remainder of the series.
My two cents on The Last Of Us
Personally, I have already seen the first two episodes thus far. I am really impressed where I left off. Funnily enough, I never played the original PlayStation games (even though I am a gamer). However, the story has already pulled me in from what I’ve watched.
The narrative is in good hands with Craig Mazin of Chernobyl fame at the helm. Additionally, I feel Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey both give very good performances as the two lead characters.
TV subscriptions and streaming services can be expensive. This is especially true for the more high-end, prestige channels like HBO.
However, it’s great that people get to finally sample this story without spending any money even if it is just for episode 1. As an avid gamer, I have both my fingers and toes crossed for another quality adaptation.
For me, I would prefer either a great BioShock or Dead Space retelling one day. Given the troubling history of video game adaptations, I’m not going to hold my breath.
If you want to save even more money on your TV viewing habits then I would definitely recommend checking out thisismoney and michaelsaves. Are you interested in checking out HBO’s The Last Of Us? Which video game would you love to see turned into a movie or TV series and why?
