There are some things we will always have to pay for, I’ll give you that and I agree completely. Nobody will ever give you say a 15 bedroom mansion for free. Not unless you’re lucky enough to win a big competition anyway (I’ve never been this lucky 🙁 ).
However, it may shock you to hear about the products and services that you can get free of charge. It certainly surprised me. Other job opportunities likes mystery shopping and Shop & Scan allow you to do a similar thing.
I don’t mean free in a communism kind of way (I kid). I like to define it more in a frugal, organized, save-as-much-money-as-you-can kind of way. “How the heck does that work?” I hear you ask. Well, in this post I will explain it all from my own experiences.
There are many freebies websites out there that will give you free samples. All this without any cash ever changing hands.
“What’s the catch? Are they really doing this out of the kindness of their hearts or is there more to it than that?” You would be very pragmatic to ask this.
On the same note, what does interest them is data. I find obtaining a sample or two might involve a few survey questions. You may even just simply have to submit an email address.
This is really the only price that you pay. I’m not so naive and neither are you. Nothing is ever really FREE. However, sometimes you don’t have to pay (not with money anyway).
This is a great thing to try out for those whose monthly grocery shopping budgets are a little tight. On the other hand, you might be struggling financially in another way (which I admit I have in the past).
If you really invest a decent amount of time into free stuff hunting then you will reap the rewards.
It can even reach the point here you are crossing items off your food shopping list. This will be down to you receiving them for free anyway. How cool is that?
Companies and businesses give away free stuff all the time in order to promote themselves. It’s certainly a unique way of advertising.
Additionally, there are even opportunities to find coupons and discount codes too. It’s pretty much never-ending as there are always new free sample offers cropping up all the time.
At least 1 in 3 people who try a free sample will go on to make a full purchase of that product. This will normally happen on the very same day. (“Product Sampling Study” by Arbitron and Edison Media Research)
This shows the amount of customers who will buy what they’ve tried during the same shopping trip. Conversely, let’s not discount the samplers who will wait to make a purchase at a later date. They may even pass the message on to their friends or family.
33% is a pretty impressive conversion rate, right? It really goes to show you how valuable free sample offers are to growing brands. This is especially true when it comes to driving up sales, particularly in supermarkets.
I will now do my best to walk you through why and how you can get your hands on some free goodies while saving a tonne of money. Let’s do this.
How do I receive free samples?
If you are doing this online then you will:
- Sign up to a free sample website
- Apply for one of the freebie offers
- Fill out your information including home address
- Answer survey questions, enter an email address or anything else they want
- Wait for your free sample to be delivered
- Use it when it arrives
Brands that do give out free stuff don’t ask much of you. What do I need to do to get free samples? Some companies require you to answer survey questions. They may want you to share information with them in other ways before they mail any freebies to you.
They may even be looking for a specific demographic. Don’t let this disappoint you if they do screen you out of the whole process. There will be many more opportunities out there.
From my experience, it might even be a quiz or a competition. As a matter of fact, some brands view information about you as a sort of “payment“. You can give them this data in exchange for free goods.
You’re not paying with money, but with information. Companies can do a lot with data seeing as market research is such a huge industry.
Brands distribute freebies out as an incentive for the aim of marketing themselves. They may want you to look at some advertising material. You may even test out a product and then give them your opinions on it.
What types of free samples can I get?
You will have an idea of what you will receive beforehand. This will be based on the samples that you’ve ordered in the past days or weeks. What is a free sample? It’s usually a scaled-down version of a full product that the brand is still currently refining.
Some deliveries can take a while. It can be easy to forget about and lose track of which particular freebie you are expecting. You also have the choice of applying for free samples that are most relevant to you.
It could be anything from food samples to beauty products. I have found free food products to be a lot rarer. This is considering that they are perishable and may not ship as well as other items.
Who offers free samples?
Thousands of big everyday household brands offer up free samples. Everybody is starting to jump on the bandwagon considering how much money customers can save.
It happens in almost every category of product you can think of (including baby and cleaning products). I’ve tested out free samples from lots of reputable food and drinks brands in the past too.
Almost all companies have found giving out samples to be an effective marketing strategy. It’s becoming much more popular.
More and more businesses are seeing how successful free stuff distribution is. This is mostly for the purpose of promoting their own brand.
Which websites should I use to find free samples?
Who gives out free samples? The site that I have used the most is free stuff finder. This is a British website, but there are also US and Canadian versions of the same site as well.
It’s like this. There is the US version of The Office but there is also (the far superior) original British series of The Office. Don’t @ me.
However, there are plenty of other great free stuff sites if you take the time to look for them such as:

How many different freebies websites are there?
There are lots of platforms out there specifically for obtaining free products and saving money like I mentioned before. A quick google search will gather lots of results for freebie sites that claim to give out free samples.
Although, many of them will show the same free stuff offers. At the same time, some sites will offer exceptional exclusive freebies that others don’t have.
For this reason, it’s worth registering with several websites. Lots of businesses sell ice cream but there is only one Ben & Jerry’s, catch my drift?
Which websites offer the best free samples? Different freebies websites have their pros and cons. I have discovered that it’s great to have a wide range of options at your disposal. You can then switch between as and when it suits you.
Why should I sign up to these free sample websites?
It may be intuitive of you to sign up to them as a fully-fledged, legitimate member. You should do this rather than just casually browsing as a “guest” visitor. Show some loyalty and register (it only takes 5 minutes).
If you take this step, they can keep you updated on all things freebies. The website will also email you with the latest and greatest free sample deals.
Should I research free stuff websites before registering?
You would do well to do your homework before you invest any time or energy into free stuff websites. Most sites are legitimate but some platforms are scams, unfortunately.
I like to check plenty of reviews before signing up and giving them any of my personal details.
How do I keep up to date with free samples?
For me, it’s very handy to join email newsletters and follow the social media accounts of free sample sites. They will then notify you instantly as soon as new offers come through.
You might want to check websites on a daily basis as new freebies do come in as often as that.
It’s good to go directly to the website too. Sometimes I find that emails don’t always contain all available freebie offers. You will stop anything from slipping through the net this way.
A strategy that I use is to bookmark my favorite free stuff websites. I can then access them easily from my browser later on. Some websites offer push notifications so maybe that is something you can make use of as well.
How quick do I need to be when hunting down free stuff?
I’ve already covered this briefly, but you will definitely need to be on your toes. Be like a penny-pinching ninja when hunting down free stuff.
You need to act this way because companies only have a limited quantity of the sample product to give away. They will close the offer for good when they’ve given all of their inventory away.
You will be wise to set up some kind of alert system. If you do this you can get there the very second new offers come down the pipe. You don’t want those other free-stuff-loving grabbers beating you to the punch.
How easy is it to receive freebies?
It’s simple enough to apply for free samples. On the contrary, there is no guarantee that they will ever send you anything. Many applications for freebies will fail for lots of different reasons.
I would recommend that you apply for lots of them. This will increase your chances in the hope that at least a small handful will be successful. There can be a good helping of rejection so it’s kind of a numbers game in a lot of ways.
Talking from personal experience, it’s kind of like growing lots of delicious strawberry plants in your garden. In the back of your mind, you know that at least some of them will likely wilt and die.
The ones that do flourish will be marvelous. Plant a much higher number than you actually need in order to compensate for any potential losses.
While we’re on the topic of gardening, you can also save a lot of money on food by keeping hens and collecting the eggs that they produce.
Will I definitely receive every free sample I apply for?
Certain freebies are set up solely as competitions. They will only give you the “chance to win” a free sample.
Instead, you may want to prioritize better offers and push these contests towards the back of the queue. You can then focus on the offers that are more of a sure thing.
I know that many of these freebie offers occur on a “first come, first served” basis. You need to be quick off the mark before they fulfill the quota for this very reason. It’s not always smooth sailing for all applicants.
How many free samples are there on the internet?
Websites update themselves regularly with new freebie offers. You can take a leaf out of my book by setting up a notification system. This means they can instantly let you know when new free samples come through.
Some sites add free samples on a daily basis so there probably won’t be that much of a drought in offers.
As soon as you accept one offer, there will likely be another one ready to go. Also, if you miss one then it doesn’t matter. There will always be another freebies deal further down the road.
Thankfully, there are no plans of stopping this wonderful onslaught of free samples. They are an effective marketing technique. It also saves samplers money and clearly works well enough for brands to continue offering them.
How do I get more free samples?
You can increase the number of free samples by diversifying your search. Cast out a wider net in terms of where you are getting your free stuff from. I try to find all the best sources of free stuff and set up accounts with all of the reputable sites.
A lot also hinges on where you are in the world. The US and UK (where I am) tend to get the lion’s share of free samples. This is mainly because of their larger economies. Many other little differences can factor in as well such as:
- age
- gender
- occupation
- religion
- marital status
- education
Should I apply for every free sample that I find?
I find it helps to try to find products that are relevant and helpful to you personally. For instance, there is no point in asking for baby products when you don’t have any children. What kind of crazed loose cannon does that?
You aren’t really supposed to do this but you can give away your sample freebie products if you don’t find it personally appealing.
If there is anything that you’re not using then maybe send them to friends or family. They may need it more than you. They can then relay their feedback back to you on their thoughts and opinions about the product.
Are there any free samples that I should try to avoid?
Clearly, if you have any allergies then you need to be extra cautious when it comes to trying food samples.
The brand should let you know beforehand if the sample food product contains nuts or anything that will cause an allergic reaction. I would suggest that you ask them directly anyway just to be safe.
Brands may only want potential customers (their target audience) to try certain products. In addition, it might be best to leave some free samples for other people.
For example, you might be handed a free sample of a car air freshener or another driving accessory. This will only be relevant for someone who owns a car, obviously.
There are many offers that aren’t worth your time. In light of this, you may need to sift through the freebies so that you can pick out the best of the bunch.
Where else can I find free samples?
Where can I get free samples? Your best tool is probably Google and other online search engines. Although, you can source freebies from other places besides the internet like:
- supermarkets
- high street stores
- other public places
There may occasionally be a store employee handing out food samples for shoppers. On the flip side, they usually restrict this to one sample per person.
On the other hand, you could always be a “savage” and try your luck a second time around.
For better results, do this while wearing a monocle and fake mustache. Obviously, your attempts are limited depending on how many different disguises you can acquire.
This is normally frowned upon in most establishments. Conversely, it’s not a crime, never forget that … EVER. If you have two or more kids, then you could ask one to sit on the shoulders of the other while wearing a very long trench coat. Okay … maybe not.
Can I hunt for free samples in person?
Free stuff hunting isn’t just an online venture either. You can get your fair share of freebies through offline methods. You can find these while attending:
- special events
- grocery stores
- trade fairs
- other venues
I’ve been seen at many free buffets saving money (or more accurately, stuffing my face with food). The admission to these venues will also have to be free for it to be worth your time.
How long do free sample deliveries take?
When will I get my free sample? You may be lucky enough for a brand to pick you for a free sample offer. If this is the case then it should take no longer than a month for them to deliver it to you.
On many occasions the delivery time won’t be specified at all (which isn’t helpful, I know). You could be waiting a while.
Your freebie delivery might be coming from overseas. In this scenario, there is a good chance that it will take much longer than a month to reach you. The distance that your package has to travel will always be a factor.
If your free sample delivery is taking an unusually long time then you might not receive it at all. I know from experience that this whole opportunity can be hit or miss.
Brands don’t dish out free samples to every single applicant all the time. I hear that this is sometimes down to the brand running out of sample products to send out.
Take your time when filling in your details, especially your address. You don’t want your freebies going to the wrong residence. Obviously, if you are getting free samples at a venue in person then you don’t need to worry about delivery.
Why hasn’t my free sample arrived yet?
I’ve already covered this somewhat, but let me expand. Signing up for free stuff doesn’t always guarantee that the mail man or woman will show up.
They have a limited quantity of sample products to give away. Unfortunately, some people are going to miss out on saving money via fee samples, despite their best efforts.
If your freebie doesn’t come then you may have to wait for the advertising campaign to end before you see anything. This can be months at the most.
There are no promises when it comes to free samples as I mentioned. This is true even if the brand tells you that you will definitely get something.
Do brands ever redeliver free samples?
It’s a good idea to exercise some patience. Free sample campaigns can run for a long time. It can take a while for everyone to receive their free products. This has been the situation for me a few times so you just need to sit on your hands for a bit.
There is no rush, right? Nobody is ever in a desperate race to get that free sachet of freeze-dried coffee. If you argue passionately against this then that’s fair enough too, I’m just saying.
You may believe that there has been a genuine mistake like the package being lost in transit. If so then you can always try contacting the brand or free sample website. You might be able to convince them to re-deliver your freebie if you’re lucky.
How large are free sample packages?
The freebies that you will receive will likely be small packages. These can squeeze fairly comfortably through a door letterbox. They usually do it this way to save money on shipping in terms of:
- size
- weight
- number of re-delivery attempts
Sample items that go through the door are especially good. It means you don’t have to be at home for delivery.
I work from home so I don’t really get out much (no joke). This means it isn’t so much of a problem for me but it’s useful for people who are always out doing something.
Alternatively, receiving larger sized freebies will mean that you need to be at home in order to answer the door. You may need to sign for them too.
It may not even matter if you miss a delivery. The package may be left with a neighbor (I know you don’t like talking to them) or local post office/depot.
How do I detect spam?
You need to be able to distinguish between genuine freebies and spam offers. Certain people specifically design spam offers to collect your information without ever giving anything back.
It should be easier to tell the difference after you’ve been doing this for a while. You will then have enough experience under your belt to spot them easily.
How do I stop spam?
Look out for opt-in or out checkboxes while you’re working your way through applying for freebies.
You will need to check or uncheck these if you don’t want brands to bother you with spam. Be wary of giving information to any other third parties too for that matter.
Don’t bother offering out any phone numbers out if they request it from you (I never do). This may lead to spammy unsolicited phone calls and texts trying to sell you crap you don’t need.
Let’s think about it for a second. Do they really need your phone number? For what purpose? My advice is to give them the bare minimum of personal information. This is purely for your own general privacy and peace of mind.
Just a name and address are really the only mandatory details, in my opinion. If they have your phone number then they can drain your money easily. They do this by swamping you with unwanted calls and texts.
Should I set up a new email address for free samples?
I would advise you to set up a specific email address dedicated to hunting down free samples. This way you can control where any spam will go if you do get any.
In contrast, it will all go into one place. It won’t get jumbled up or interfere with any of your other important inboxes either.
It can be a pain in the ass to separate and unsubscribe from various websites if they start getting in your way. I learned this the hard way.
It’s like when you go to the beach and sand manages to get everywhere (on your skin, in your clothes and bags). This is the least bad analogy I can think of for now but nevertheless, it’s annoying as hell.
What about my privacy?
Please don’t feel that you have to tell freebies sites anything and everything. People will choose to draw the line at a certain point in order to protect their own privacy. It depends on how open or closed off you want to be. It’s entirely up to you.
On the contrary, if you don’t like the arrangement then you can always pass. You may feel that they are asking you for too much personal information or you will receive lots of spam. You always have the option of walking away.
How do I avoid free sample scams?
Sadly, the free sample game can potentially just be another avenue for scammers to exploit people. Most free stuff offers are genuine money savers.
Although, some freebies are just there to gather your data like before. This can then lead to identity theft and other kinds of fraud.
Don’t let this scare you away, the scams are rare and pretty easy to spot when they do occur. You can combat this by doing your homework on a brand before signing up to one of their so-called “free samples“.
Why do free sample incentives work?
Some businesses provide free food and refreshments at a physical venue. There will likely be a much higher turnout under these circumstances. It would certainly work for me being the glutton that I am.
Sometimes you have to dangle the carrot in front of people. This will make them pay attention to you and your brand’s message.
I’m not saying the customers are like horses, but it’s all about incentives and giving something of value back. Give and take if you like. If you provide lots of value then your customers will trust and stay loyal to you.
Who doesn’t like getting something for nothing? There is certainly a demand from customers like you and I.
They might want to sample a product for free before they go ahead and purchase it. Let’s be honest, most of us like to try before we buy (myself included).
They can also tell their friends about the free sample and the money that they saved. This will then tend to result in even more leads and sales purely through word of mouth.

Clearly, dishing out free samples works or else brands wouldn’t bother taking part now would they?
It is pretty well documented that the majority of participants that try out a free sample go on to make a purchase. This will either be same or similar product at some time in the future. This statistic should shed some light on why business love this kind of marketing.
Why do brands give out free samples? The brand’s reputation will go up immensely in the eyes of the customers.
They will see that they are giving their product away for free and who doesn’t like free booty? It’s sometimes the case that almost any publicity is good publicity.
How do free samples improve products?
Brands can gather opinions and marketing information from the feedback that testers choose to give them. This is valuable data. It will accurately tell the business what they are getting right and wrong just from the dispersal of freebies.
They can use this information to make changes and improvements. Have you ever seen a food product claiming to have a “new and improved recipe“. There is a good chance some market research went into that, possibly free sample marketing. There are certainly multiple reasons for brands to try free samples.

We can learn that there are multiple ways of hunting down free stuff both online and off. We also know the importance of remaining diligent. You and I need to protect our personal data while applying for free samples.
