How can I improve as a flyer distributor? We all need a helping hand from time to time, regardless of whether we’re beginners or experts.
Flyer distribution workers are no different. This type of work might seem simple on the outside but there will always be stumbling blocks.
You may think you have it all figured out. Then again, there are always additional things you can do as a distributor that will give you that extra edge. I certainly learned this in my time as a flyer and catalog distributor.
According to some leaflet distribution companies, approximately 67% of residents who received distribution material through their doors went ahead and purchased something afterwards as a result of this marketing.
This is a surprisingly high conversion rate in my opinion. It really shocked me when I first heard this statistic. Who realized flyer distribution marketing ever worked this well? It also goes to show that people can be more co-operative if you use the right approach.
What makes a great flyer distributor? As a distributor, you really want to make the most out of this previous statistic. You can do this by using every weapon in your arsenal.
Nobody ever knows everything about a subject (except, well maybe Daft Punk when it comes to knowing how to drop that sick beat).
Anyway, there is always more that you can learn about a job. This is true no matter how seasoned you are. Let’s take a look at what we could be doing as flyer and catalog distributors that maybe we’re not doing currently.
1. Understand exactly what you are distributing
A lot of the time an advertisement will do a pretty good job of explaining itself without additional assistance. If you don’t believe me, check out these simple yet bad ass posters for Heinz tomato ketchup.
However, I know from experience that recipients will sometimes have queries and questions. This means that it will help if you the distributor has the relevant information at hand. If you do then you can easily pass it on to them.
Some flyer distribution work will involve distributing hand-to-hand. For this reason, you need to have decent communication skills.
If you have some knowledge about what it is you are distributing then that’s even better. People will generally gravitate towards people who seem to know what they’re talking about. In my view, it gives you that added credibility.
If you don’t understand the advertisement that you’re distributing, then how the hell are the recipients supposed to understand it either.
Having understanding also means that you can really get across how the product or service in question will benefit the recipient. If you can do this then the advertisement has the maximum potential to serve its purpose.
It is really useful in catalog distribution. This is because this job involves trying to convince the customer to buy a product from a catalog. You need to be a good communicator if you want chase those juicy leads and sales.
2. Familiarize yourself with the environment in which you are distributing
When I worked at a flyer distribution job, it helped me to be familiar with and understand the geography of the local area I was working within. You will have a feel for the area this way. In addition, you will know where is going to be most crowded with people and at what time.
This will help you shave time off your working day and make you more efficient overall. You will likely know all the shortcuts this way. Hopefully, you won’t be wandering around aimlessly like I was as a newbie distributor.
Where should I distribute flyers? Chances are, if you know exactly where to distribute then it means that your advertisement will reach the right people. This will ideally be the largest or (more importantly) most well-suited target audience. Perfect!
You don’t want to be wasting your time distributing in a location where people have no interest in what you have to distribute.
Clearly, you wouldn’t put up posters for fast food on the walls inside of a gym. How maniacal and counter-productive is that? Obviously, the advertising campaign will be a lot more effective if you are distributing in the best place.

3. Find some storage space for your flyers
In my opinion, it’s beneficial for distributors to have some storage space in their home or another safe place. You don’t need to have a whole aircraft hangar at your disposable.
It can be anywhere secure like a garage or a friend’s house, for example. This is to store and stockpile all the advertising materials that you have yet to distribute. It isn’t necessarily a must have for workers, but it helps.
You don’t even need a massive amount of space. It just needs to be large enough to contain stacks of:
- flyers
- leaflets
- posters
- catalogs
I find that It can get a little trickier with the thicker and heavier catalogs or brochures. However, the faster you get rid of them and distribute, the more space you’ll have.
If you don’t have the room then consider throwing out stuff that you don’t need in order to make space. You could even take a leaf out of my book and dedicate a specific space in a room of your house. This can be the utility room or a spare bedroom, for instance.
If your employer gives you your distribution materials on the day and doesn’t make you take it home with you then you can ignore this point altogether. It all depends on how your particular flyer distribution employer goes about doing things.
In my experience, freelancers don’t have to worry about this. If you are interested in freelance flyer distribution jobs then there are some great platforms available to you.
One of them is a website called Fiverr. Here you can get work and advertise your services as a flyer distributor to attract thousands of customers on a global scale.
It can be an advantage to store at home. I always find this handy as you can access your distribution materials as and when you need them. Sometimes it’s better this way. At least you don’t have to go backwards and forwards to your employer headquarters to pick them up.
4. Ignore the time-wasters
This point kind of goes back to choosing a prime location and the right people to distribute to. What is the point in putting up a poster in a place where the people viewing it won’t care?
Let’s face it, some houses will never buy from catalogs. The sad truth is that certain people will take one glance at a mail-order catalog and then throw it out. I’ve seen it first hand. There are so many other choices available for buying things such as:
- internet
- telephone
- physical bricks-and-mortar stores
For this reason, it’s a good idea to target households that might be limited to only a few purchasing options.
Who should I distribute to? Just to be sure, you might want to set up a three-strikes system for any households. If they fail to make a purchase from the catalog 3 times then you can put a line through that address. This will weed out the people you don’t want to target anymore.
I recommend that you make a note of it or print out a map. You can then scribble a black mark over that home so that you won’t have to remember for next time. You can then focus on other residents so you’re not wasting your time anymore.
Some people will have zero interest in what you have to distribute. You can sometimes tell who is a good fit based on physical characteristics such as:
- age
- gender
- body type
You would be wise to give flyers for hair and nail salons to women of any age but not necessarily to men, for instance.
Advertisements can also cost quite a lot of money to produce and print. Therefore, you don’t want to waste them on people who don’t want them. In this case, both parties lose. There is no point wasting your time and energy if you know it isn’t right.
If someone is being rude to you (which can happen in distribution work) then you shouldn’t engage with them in an argument. Doing so will use up valuable work time. Instead, you can use this time on recipients who show an interest in what you are distributing. Believe me, it’s all about preparing and organizing.
5. Pick the right moments to distribute
When should I distribute flyers? Catalog and flyer distribution can be more or less successful during certain times of the day or even year.
People buy a lot of stuff around Christmas. It may be best to try your luck distributing during that particular holiday. The purse strings will tend the be looser as people like to spoil themselves and their loved ones.
You will want to distribute at times during the day when you will expose the most people possible to your advertisement. Imagine that you’re a fisherman, cast your nets out when you know there will be lots of fish a-swimmin’.
At the same, many people are at work during the day. You might want to time door-drop distributions to evenings and weekends when people are in. Your flyer or leaflet might be thrown out by one member of the household before the rest of the family get to see it.
People are generally less busy when they’re not working. This generally will mean that they will be more receptive to distributors and what they have to offer. People can take down posters and throw flyers in the trash, all in a matter of hours. The owner of the land has the right to take down any advertisements at will.
If you’re lucky, your poster might stay up for a few days or weeks (at a stretch). For this reason, it’s important that the most eyeballs see it within a window of time.
You can distribute mail-order catalogs at almost any time (within reason). Although, if you are collecting orders for catalogs then you will to do it at a time when residents will be at home.
If you call in when no ones home then clearly you will just be wasting your own time. On the other hand, if you knock on the doors during the evening then residents might see this as rudeness. It’s a double-edged sword.
Hopefully, some of these points will stick in your mind next time you are out distributing flyers on the job. How do I get better at flyer distribution?
