If you had not already considered working from home before the pandemic, there is a good chance that you are now. Today, running a business from the comfort of home is no longer taboo, but considered a smart move for many entrepreneurs. But, if you’ve yet to get started, here are some tips that can push you forward as you launch and run your home business.
Decide what you can do from home
First, you have to decide what, exactly, you can do from home. This website has discussed many money-making opportunities before, including acting as a mock juror, reviewing telephone calls, and evaluating search engines.
You can also fall back on your current skill set. Working from home makes sense for knowledge-based jobs, such as customer service and software development.
Write a business plan
Your business plan is essentially a handbook that you can look back upon as a roadmap to success. It is a tool to grow your business, and, if applicable, even attract investors.
According to some, your best bet is to keep it short and sweet and targeted to your specific audience. It’s best to begin with a one-page pitch and then expand it to include your goals and objectives.
Your business plan should include, at minimum, a summary, reasons why your company will be a success, how you plan to execute your strategies, a management summary, and a financial plan
Create a business structure
Your business structure helps to legitimize your business. In the UK, you can choose to be a sole trader, partnership, limited liability partnership, or limited company. Do your research, and then decide which structure is best for you.
Set up a home office
Setting up a home office doesn’t sound particularly tricky. But, it can be. You typically have three choices: retrofitting your current home office to fit your needs, making an addition to your home, or, if space doesn’t allow for either of these, buying a new property.
Unfortunately, the latter option is also the most expensive. But, you can save money if you don’t mind purchasing a home that needs a bit of work. An “As Is” home is an option as long as it doesn’t have mildew, water leaks, or structural problems. You’ll also want to skip houses with termites and other pests.
Apply for work-at-home permits
Depending on where you live and what you do, your municipality may require that you have a business permit. If you live in London, for example, you might need a license if you make structural changes to your home. And, if you live in a council house, you may need additional permissions.
Get insured
No matter what type of business you run, getting insured is crucial. Business insurance is relatively inexpensive, but it can keep you from suffering significant financial losses in the future.
There are many different types of business insurance, including builders, cleaning, hairdressing, home baking, pub, and roofing. Direct Line For Business explains the insurance is suitable for tradespeople, estate agents, contractors, and home businesses of all types.
Establish your online presence
Just because you have a small home office doesn’t mean you can’t have a wide reach. Get up and running on the web by launching a website. You might hire an agency to do this or utilize tools, such as WordPress or DIY site-building programs, to get started.
Your website should include information about your business, yourself, and your hours. If applicable, pricing and delivery areas should all also be in an easy-to-read typeface and prominently displayed.
As you can see, there are many pieces that have to fall together to make your work-at-home endeavor successful. From deciding what to do to insuring your new business, the few tips above can get you started on the right foot.
