Who Is The Most Suitable Person For A Call Center Job?

You might be under the vague assumption that you need to be a very special kind of person to work in a call center and successfully make money. This is somewhat true, but at the same time, it isn’t in certain other aspects of the job.
On the whole, most call center work is entry-level and requires no qualifications or experience. However, being a call center representative can be much better suited to certain types of people.
If you are one of these particular people then you will be much happier in this job day-to-day. You will probably be better at it too.
Of course, there are personality traits that will either help or hinder you in a call center job. An individual might also be restricted from this work based on other personal attributes like:
- age
- temperament
- your general level of social outgoingness
There are other things to consider apart from the job itself. You can either be a call center agent in or out of your own home.
Ask yourself these two questions. Am I content in doing virtual call center work remotely from home, alone? Conversely, am I happier working with lots of other people around me?
Let’s take a closer examination of who would or would not be a good fit for this line of work. I will also try to further explain (based on my own experiences doing various call center jobs) why this may be the case.
What are the attributes of a competent call center representative?
What are the qualities of a good call center agent? You will be on the front line when it comes to dealing with customers. This being the case, you will need to know how to give customer service that is:
- polite
- friendly
- effective
If you want to do a remote call center job from home then it helps if you are a person who is independent when it comes to work and also a self-starter. However, if you don’t possess these skills then these are things that you can always learn along the way.
Is remote call center work good for people who like being at home?
If you enjoy spending time at home then I would dare to imagine you would be quite open to the idea of working remotely from home as a virtual call center agent.
On the other hand, you might be of the opinion that you don’t want to work solely from home. You may want to venture outside and get some vitamin D once in a while. This might be true seeing as people in this position tend to spend a proportionate amount of time in their homes anyway.
If you like being at home then you might not enjoy being stuck in a crowded call center with lots of other employees. It may not be appealing for you to be dealing with colleagues and supervisors all day (I can relate). Although, you might alternatively view it as a convenient excuse to bring yourself out of your own shell.
Is this work easier for people who have worked remotely before?
Like myself, you might have already had previous experience working from home whether it be:
- running a home-based business
- being a stay-at-home parent
- doing another job remotely
You shouldn’t have too many problems transitioning into a home-based call center job under any of these circumstances. Doing remote call center work from home is ideal for someone with a physical disability and who has trouble leaving the home (hermits permitted too).
How can I adapt to the mechanics of remote call center work?
I know for a fact that working from home and being self-employed are similar in the sense that you have to be hard-working and good at motivating yourself. If you have worked and earned money in this way before then you will already know the routine.
In this scenario, there is no boss to get in your face and bark orders at you. For this reason, a virtual worker will need to learn to be very self-disciplined.
You need to hold yourself up to a very high standard. Do this in order to put in a good work performance every working day and keep your employer happy.
Who can do call center work? Obviously, if you have worked at any call center in the past then you will have a firm grasp of how the job works. Having previous experience means the learning curve will be less steep for you.
Will prior experience help me work a call center job?
If you have previous call center experience or even a history of working in any retail or customer service type jobs then that’s generally a good thing.
This experience will be relevant and useful to you as a call center representative. In a way, call center work is sort of like working in a store but with everything happening over the phone instead.
Working as a call center agent is often considered as a first job for many young people as soon as they leave school. It offers work opportunities to those who might not have achieved the desired academic qualifications.
I didn’t have any call center experience when I was accepted for my first call center job so there is hope for anyone.
How lonely is a home-based call center job?
If you are quite a sociable individual, then doing this sort of work from home on your own will likely be something you need to come to terms with. You will need to learn to cope without having coworkers around to chit-chat with between calls.
Social interactions will be minimal when working remotely in isolation. If you are a person who has a gregarious personality and you don’t think you can handle this then I wouldn’t advise you to go down that route.
Are call centers hiring currently? Are there any call center jobs near me? When it comes to home-based call center work, you can apply for jobs the conventional way (by doing an online job search).
However, another option you may want to consider (for making money online from home) is freelance call center work. You can find freelance call center jobs on platforms like fiverr. This website has thousands of registered clients from around the world offering work.
What is it like working in a busy office building?
A more introverted person will probably need to come out of their shell a bit more if they are working on a busy call center floor inside of a large office building.
This is true as employees will need to be on good terms with both callers and their colleagues. A call center is a loud, hectic environment so you might need to be more assertive in order to be heard above the noise.
Working in a large contact center means dealing with office culture. Furthermore, this includes all the politics that go along with the job and you will also be working in a team. I can totally understand this not being everybody’s cup of tea either.
Can I learn to be a good call center agent?
Your supervisor will teach most of the stuff you need to know while doing a call center job during training. If you are struggling with anything else, you can ask your coworkers for support.
Can a call center agent change themselves to fit in at work?
You know the well-worn saying “be yourself”? Well, that’s not always applicable to every situation. Sometimes, you will have to act differently in the workplace in order to make people around you feel more comfortable.
How can I be a good call center agent? I find that people ordinarily don’t behave the same way at work as they would do at home or anywhere else.
It’s not uncommon for employees to mold themselves into a specific (perhaps more professional) type of person. You may find you need to do this in order to get through the working day unscathed. Call center work is no different.
Why do I need to change who I am in my career?
Wanting to change in life (whether it be applied to work or anything else) is a good thing for the most part. It means going outside of your comfort zone. You can challenge yourself to fix your own personal blind spots and develop life skills that you might be falling behind in.
People can reshape themselves in order to conform to these differing circumstances, but you might find that it’s not worth it. I believe that a person shouldn’t always have to force themselves to do this if it grinds them down and makes them unhappy.
It should now be pretty obvious to you that call center work isn’t for everyone. One person may have a really bad experience from this gig whereas another individual might end up thriving from it. It can be quite polarizing and it all depends on your own unique likes or dislikes.
It’s important to also note that call center work is really quite flexible as people can both work on a full-time or part-time basis.
We can learn that your satisfaction with a call center job will hinge on several different factors. This will be things such as whether you want to work remotely from home or if you would prefer to commute to a dedicated contact center.
A lot also depends on how much you’re going to enjoy the work itself. In addition, we need to think about whether or not a person is going to be good at performing the daily routine of a call center representative.
We know that many call center positions are minimum wage which means that you won’t need any special skills upfront. What a person needs to know can be learned on the job fairly easily.
I suggest the next thing on your list should be to do some further research on the intricacies of call center work. This way, you can determine whether this line of work truly is suitable for you.
You can also study up on other important skills such as communication and working in a team. Going out of your way to do this will help mold you into an improved call center representative.
In addition, I recommend that you check out some job listings in order to see descriptions of what different call center opportunities, positions, vacancies and openings entail. Sometimes you can just tell from this information if the job is right for you or not.
While on your job search, you could consider enlisting some help. Jobscan is a useful tool that will optimize your resume. You might like to know “what questions are asked in a call center interview?” Good news! This company also offers up tips in regard to acing the job interview process.
Do you think that you would personally be a good fit for a call center job whether it be working from home or not? What do you think you would like and dislike about this kind of work?
